Grade 4 students begin to learn how to move beyond looking for answers directly laid out in text. They start to infer meaning from what they are viewing and reading. What does the author want us to understand? What clues help us to better understand the text? What information helps us to draw conclusions? This lesson is an extension of the "Art of a Good Question" on the Grade 3 page.
Learn MoreAs Grade 4 students begin, in earnest, to research and prepare informational texts, they learn how to ask questions to focus their research and to organize information into presentations. Students should also learn to use information ethically by citing the information they use. This lesson will review the development of good questions and how to search for information from multiple sources (Grade 3 lesson - The Art of a Good Question). They will learn about ethical use of information, citing their texts in a reference page.
Learn MoreGrade 4 students are already viewing and using procedural texts in daily life. From recipes, to How-to-draw videos on Youtube, to setup instructions for video games, to building lego projects, to reading instructions for a school project, these all provide instructions about how to do something. For this lesson, students will analyze a variety of procedural texts and media samples, identify similarities, determine a structure for this type of text or media sample, and then create their own procedural text/media sample.
